The Farmhouse Bed

It's here! I mean, it's built!! And I built it myself!! Yes I did!!!

And this, my friends, is the space I had to work with. I'm telling you, a tight workshop is not the best (or safest) of places to build a king-sized bed!!

Ooooh, the bed is assembled in the bedroom!! This is me being patient with my husband the photographer while I wait for him to come and help me screw the side cleats into the footboard. The next picture (because there had to be two) showed a slightly less patient expression on my face. :)

The slats are in!!! (1.5 inches apart, as requested by the mattress warranty people.)

And the bed is done and dressed!! Eeeeeee!!!

Let me not forget to tell you all the work we did on the walls before we actually got to bringing the bed up. See that wallpaper below? Yes, we did that. See that paint? Yes, us too.

This is the picture of true and utter exhaustion. I was so completely done.

Ryan the photographer tried to get some interesting shots. (I built the table too, but some months ago!)

Oooooh, Aaaaaaah!

Couldn't get away without a weird one, could I? This is me in the mirror, utterly exhausted (and showing it with my crazed expression) so happy to be done, and quite proud of my work!!

I saw on Ana White's site that you were looking for suggestions to make the bed more stable. Check out Lee Valley Tools selection of bed hardware. I used the "no-mortice bedlocks" for the kingsize I made for my parents. Oh, and the bed looks wonderful!

Thanks for the compliments, and Lee-Ann, I'll definitely check out Lee Valley. Thanks for the suggestion!

Out of curiousity...did you do mattress only? I.e. no box spring?

What was your overall experience? Any tips?

Hi April. We did do mattress only - we asked very specifically when we bought the mattress what the warranty had to say about no box spring, and they said as long as the slats were 1.5 inches apart and there was a middle support, it would be fine.

Overall experience!? Really fun, but a lot of work, and really hard to work in a tight space. The trickiest part for me was how to screw the 4x4 posts in straight and even. The bed, although you can't tell it, is not totally square because of that. :) And another hard part was how to really secure the 2x4 cleats to the headboard so there's no movement. The joints are still weak at those spots, and I'm looking into getting some joining hardware (see previous comment by Lee-Ann) to make it stronger.

Overall, it was great and I'm really happy with the end product!

Such a great job! I was wondering if the 2x4 metel things would work for your connection? IDK what they're called but they are a u shaped hanger that attaches the 2 x 4 to the joint. My beams in my sunroom are exposed and you can see these at each join where the trusses connect to the house. I've seen them on a lot of decks as well and i think they're super cheap. Love your wall treatment too. I seem to always get seriously home improvement minded when i am preggo too, they call it nesting. getting nest ready for your chick!

Okay, I know no one else who in the late stages of pregnancy would build their own bed from scratch. I love the last picture too! You are "Handy Woman"!!!!!!!!
