I'll let you decide.
On the recent long weekend we headed out to Allouette Lake to go camping. Ryan's parents had reserved a double site for them and us, and they had been there for a few days before we arrived. The weather forecast loomed over our plans for the weekend, threatening rain, rain, and more rain. But we charged on, me always the optimist, and Ryan really feeling like camping. We got there, set up our new tent that we had just bought, and had a very nice evening with Grandma and Grampa. Plava seemed to be having a great time - and we knew this well when it was her bedtime and there was no going to bed for her!!! She played and laughed and rolled around (her new trick), but would not go to sleep. No bottle, or boob (hah!), or book, or song, or anything would get her sleepy. So we just got her up and decided to bring her to bed when we went.
We retired after dark, crawled into our tent, curled up and all of us fell fast asleep. It started to rain. It really started to rain.
You know the sound of rain on a tent? You know how loud it is? I don't mind it myself, nor does Ryan, but little Plava woke up and was absolutely beside herself. She screamed at the top of her lungs. We turned on a flashlight and tried to calm her down, assuring her that we were there with her. She just looked around, confused, and kept screaming. We battled with her for a good 15 minutes of top-of-the-lung volume, and finally tried a book, which got her quiet right away. She eventually fell asleep again.
During this mayhem, I was dealing with some mysterious nausea, and felt like puking for the whole middle-of-the-night ordeal. The next morning was no better, so we decided, since it was still pouring by daybreak, that we'd head home, happy to have had a nice evening with the grandparents and leaving it at that.
SO, do you think we're wimps? Or do you think we were justified in leaving?

These shots are from the day we left when we got a visit from Ryan's sister's family.

You know what? You gotta do what you gotta do! I went camping this past fall with the grade 12 girls PE class. It started raining BUCKETS in the middle of the night and it was freezing cold. Our tent partially fell down at 3 a.m. and we were out in the icy rain trying to put it back up. I couldn't WAIT to leave the next day and I LOVE camping! I say if you have a screaming baby and you need your sleep and she needs her sleep, well, go home and get it! There will be MANY more opportunities to camp this summer and slowly ease sweet Plava into it.
I would have left too. I thought until now that there is nothing worse than tenting in the rain. But adding the poor teething unhappy baby and some mysterious nausea is even worse!
Hmm...mysterious nausea????
I usually consider myself a rather hardy character, and in my junior high and high school years, I spent many a night on the ground in a tent, surrounded by rivers of water that slowly soaked my sleeping bag. (And I considered that FUN and ADVENTUROUS!) However, as I've matured (okay, okay, gotten old) I've discovered I'm not driven by a desire to sleep in a tent anymore. And certainly not with my infant! And if that isn't enough, to add insult to injury with the rain, to feel nauseous all night???? NO WAY---I do NOT think you are wimps! =)
